Written in Kashmir in the eleventh century and running to hundreds of tales nested inside one another: kings and thieves, demons and merchants, clever wives and foolish ministers. Many of the stories reached Europe and turn up in Boccaccio, Chaucer and the Arabian Nights, usually without their origin attached.
