Written in 1820, these short plays retell the rape of Proserpine and her mother Ceres’s grief, and the foolish king Midas who judges Pan above Apollo and wishes everything he touches into gold. They remained unpublished for a century until André Koszul edited them, revealing that Percy Shelley’s Hymn of Apollo, Hymn of Pan and Arethusa were written as their songs.
