Puddleford is a backwoods settlement in the old West of Michigan, and Riley introduces its inhabitants one by one: squires, preachers, lawyers, schoolmasters and philosophers of the cracker barrel, all speaking in broad frontier dialect. Town meetings, lawsuits and arguments about the migration of birds make up the comedy.
