Lord Quex, once the wickedest man in London, is engaged to the young Muriel Eden. Sophy Fullgarney, a Bond Street manicurist and Muriel’s devoted foster-sister, is sure he has not changed and sets a trap to prove it, leading to a celebrated night-time duel of wits between the two in a country-house bedroom.
