A nineteenth-century guide to conversation, compiled for Portuguese speakers by a man who evidently knew no English and worked through a French dictionary. Its familiar dialogues, idioms and anecdotes come out as “The sun lie down” and “I fear of the thunderbolt”, and this 1884 American edition presents them as a jest in sober earnest.
Admired by Mark Twain, it remains one of the funniest books ever written by accident. Download the free EPUB.
