During the wars with Revolutionary and Napoleonic France, thousands of French and allied prisoners were held at Norman Cross in Huntingdonshire. Walker, a local physician, reconstructs the depot from plans, letters and official records: its block house and walls, the guards, food and disease, escapes, the prisoners’ craftwork in bone and straw, and the French bishop who ministered to them.
A thorough local history of a remarkable episode in the Napoleonic wars. Download the free EPUB.
