Abbott tells the life of the Russian tsar for young readers, from his perilous childhood and escape to the pastry-seller Menshikov who became his favourite. Peter’s work with his own hands in the shipyard at Saardam, his war with Sweden and his forced reforms of Russian dress and custom all appear, along with his terrible capacity for cruelty.
