Asked to give a paper on the Fifth of November, the Jesuit historian found the accepted story full of holes. Working from the State Papers, he questions the persons concerned, the government’s intelligence service, the convenient “discovery”, the fates of Percy, Catesby and Tresham, and the case Robert Cecil’s ministers built against the Catholic priests.
A sharp revisionist argument that provoked S. R. Gardiner’s reply, essential for anyone weighing the evidence on Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators. Download the free EPUB.
