Henry Martyn left Cambridge, where he had been senior wrangler, to serve as an East India Company chaplain in India, and spent his short life translating the New Testament into Hindustani and Persian. George Smith uses journals and letters suppressed in earlier memoirs, including his unhappy love for Lydia Grenfell, and follows him to Persia and his death in 1812.
