Giacinto Achilli, a former Dominican friar who became a Protestant, recounts his imprisonment by the Roman Inquisition and attacks the papacy, its priests and the Jesuits. The book made him a celebrity of English anti-Catholic platforms, and John Henry Newman’s exposure of his conduct led to the famous libel trial of 1852.
