Beginning as a London thesis of 1921, this study follows the Arab advance beyond the Oxus: the early raids, the campaigns of Qutayba ibn Muslim, the Turkish counterstroke that nearly undid them, and the final reconquest of Transoxania. Gibb draws closely on the Arabic chroniclers and pays attention to trade routes, local princes and Chinese involvement.
