Writing for American and British readers, Stanley describes the slave raiding he had witnessed in Central and East Africa, the caravans and the depopulated villages, and argues that steamers, railways and European administration on the Congo and the great lakes would end the trade. It is a document of the anti-slavery cause written entirely from the standpoint of the colonial powers.
