Owen Rowe O’Neil grew up on a Transvaal farm in a Boer family of Irish name, among wars with neighbouring peoples and boyhood friendships with African children. He went on to live in Swaziland, and describes his dealings with its rulers, including the queen regent Labotsibeni at Zombode. His racial attitudes are those of a white settler of his day.
