Written for Edmund Gosse’s series of short literary histories, this survey follows Czech letters from the earliest Bohemian poetry and the precursors of Jan Hus through the Hussite wars, the humanists and theologians, the Unity of Brethren and the historians of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to the revival of the language after its long eclipse.
