Williams goes looking for the real Bohemia behind Henri Murger’s famous phrase. He sets the scene with the Revolution of 1830 and the romantic malaise of the century, sketches Parisian society and its rakes, then follows the young poets, painters and hangers-on of the romantic cénacles, Murger and his friends, their amusements, and the streets and cafés where they lived.
Lively social history for readers of Balzac and Murger, or anyone who has seen La Bohème and wondered how true it was. Download the free EPUB.
