Drawn to Spain by the conquistadors who reached America, Ober, a traveller and naturalist, set out to compress three thousand years of its history into one short book. He runs from the earliest peoples, Romans and Visigoths through the Moorish centuries and the Reconquista to Ferdinand and Isabella, the Inquisition, the revolt of the Netherlands and later decline.
