Stapley begins in Granada in 1492, the year Ferdinand and Isabella conquered the last Moorish kingdom, and then goes back to the young Genoese sailor, his years in Madeira and Portugal, the long wait for royal favour and the queen’s decision. The voyages follow, with the rivalry of Martín Pinzón on the return.
