Born into slavery on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and trained as a blacksmith, James W. C. Pennington fled north at about twenty. He describes the treatment of enslaved people in Maryland, the beating of his father that drove him to flight, and the frightening days on the run, before his new life as a free man, teacher and Presbyterian pastor.
