W. J. Peele gathers sketches of North Carolina statesmen, judges and soldiers, many written by men who knew them: Nathaniel Macon by Thomas Hart Benton, David Swain by Zebulon Vance, Thomas Ruffin by William A. Graham, through to Confederate generals Pettigrew, Pender and Ramseur, with speeches and portraits.
