Mary Scudder, a devout young woman of Newport, loves her sailor cousin James Marvyn but is promised to the Reverend Samuel Hopkins, a stern theologian who preaches against the slave trade. Stowe sets their story among tea-table theology, spinning wheels, French émigrés and the charming, dangerous Aaron Burr.
Stowe’s own favourite among her novels, and a searching portrait of New England faith and grief. Download the free EPUB.
