A prologue of 1536 shows the last abbot of Whalley cursing those who bring about his ruin. The main story moves to 1612 and the moors and forest below Pendle Hill, where gentle Alizon Device, crowned May Queen, lives among a family of witches led by old Mother Demdike, while quarrels among the local gentry take a sinister turn.
Built on the real Pendle trials, it pairs local history with full-blooded Gothic sorcery for readers of Victorian supernatural fiction. Download the free EPUB.
