Sir Mortimer Ferne, a gallant captain at Elizabeth’s court, pledges himself to Damaris Sedley before sailing with an English squadron against the Spanish Main. The voyage brings battles, prisoners and a terrible choice, and the question of what he did there follows him home to a court and a woman who must judge him.
