Abandoned by her foolish brewer husband with five children and no money, a beautiful Frenchwoman raised in England turns, with the help of her shrewd maid Amy, to life as a kept mistress. Her career takes her through Paris, a prince’s favour, Holland and the court of Charles II, while her lost children are never quite out of mind.
Defoe’s darkest novel of 1724, a sharp study of money, sex and conscience, presented here in both parts. Download the free EPUB.
