Under James I, a group of persecuted Catholic gentlemen led by Robert Catesby plots to blow up the king and Parliament, with the soldier Guy Fawkes as their instrument. Ainsworth follows the tunnelling beneath Westminster, the mysterious tolling heard within the wall, the hunt for the conspirators and the fate of those drawn into the treason, adding romance and the supernatural to the history.
