On an ostrich farm in the South African Karoo, three children grow up under the rule of the Boer widow Tant’ Sannie: her stepdaughter Em, the fierce and clever orphan Lyndall, and Waldo, the German overseer’s dreamy son. Their lives are upset by the arrival of the swindler Bonaparte Blenkins, and later by Lyndall’s restless questioning of faith and of women’s place.
