Madeleine Vanderlynden runs her father’s farm behind the Flanders front while the British army comes and goes across it for four years. Her affair with a young English officer, her quarrels over billets and compensation, and her stubborn defence of the land show the war through French eyes. John Galsworthy provides the preface.
