Malchus, a young Carthaginian of good family, serves with Hannibal from the camps of the African desert and the politics of Carthage to the campaigns in Spain and the siege of Saguntum, then over the Alps into Italy for Trebia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae. Henty’s preface admits his schoolboy sympathy for Carthage against Rome.
