Ten linked stories, each centred on a queen, move through the courts of medieval England and France, among Plantagenet kings, barons trafficking with the Bruce and lovers bound by vows. Cabell presents them as the work of an old chronicler and uses them to test the ideal of chivalry against ambition, treachery and desire.
