As the Goths close around Rome in the early fifth century, Antonina, the daughter of a stern Christian convert, is driven from her home and finds shelter with Hermanric, a young Gothic warrior. Their love is threatened on every side, by famine inside the walls, by a scheming pagan priest, and by Goisvintha, a Gothic woman who has sworn vengeance on Rome.
