Daniel Upton begins by admitting he shot his friend Edward Derby in a cell at the Arkham Sanitarium, and insists he is no murderer. He traces Derby’s story from a precocious, weak-willed boyhood to his marriage with the strange Asenath Waite of Innsmouth, after which Edward begins to seem, at times, like someone else entirely.
