In 1815, with Napoleon fresh from defeat, the wealthy young Englishman Richard Beckett travels to Paris and falls for a mysterious veiled countess whose husband, the Count de St. Alyre, seems to stand between them. Masked balls, secret assignations and a room at the inn of the Dragon Volant draw him deeper, while Dr. Hesselius’s notes on ancient drugs hint at what is coming.
