Madeleine Blanchet, the kind young wife of a careless miller, takes pity on François, a foundling child boarded out to a poor woman nearby. He grows up devoted to her, is driven away by her husband and the scheming Sévère, and returns as a young man to save the mill and the woman who once saved him.
One of Sand’s beloved rustic idylls, gentle and luminous, in a careful English translation. Download the free EPUB.
