Travelling in Corsica in 1841, Dumas himself is welcomed into the home of the twin brothers Lucien and Louis de Franchi. Lucien has stayed on the island and is settling an old vendetta, while Louis lives in Paris, yet each senses what befalls the other, a bond that takes on dreadful weight as the story moves to the capital.
