In the cosmopolitan drawing rooms of Rome, the dilettante novelist Julien Dorsenne watches the lives of exiles and adventurers: the Venetian Countess Steno, the jealous Pole Boleslas Gorka, an old Chouan aristocrat, financiers and art dealers. Love affairs and old grudges build toward a drama Dorsenne observes but cannot stop.
