Frémont’s narrative of his government surveys of 1842 and 1843–44 follows his party up the Platte to South Pass and the Wind River peaks, then on to Oregon, south through the Great Basin and over the snowbound Sierra Nevada into California. This 1852 edition adds a description of California’s geography and notices of the gold region.
