Rather than one expedition, Gordon tells the whole history of the push north, region by region: Spitsbergen, Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land and onward around the Arctic Circle. Whalers, merchants hunting northern passages, Mackenzie on his river and the later polar parties all appear, with illustrations by Edward Whymper and sectional maps.
A compact and readable survey of Arctic exploration up to the eve of the polar conquest. Download the free EPUB.
