In 1572 Francis Drake sailed with two small ships to raid Nombre de Dios, the Spanish treasure port on the Isthmus of Panama. This account, compiled from the notes of men who sailed with him, tells of the failed assault, the alliance with escaped African slaves known as Cimarrons, Drake’s first sight of the Pacific from a great tree and the ambush of the mule trains.
A vivid Elizabethan narrative of privateering, published by Drake’s nephew in 1626. Download the free EPUB.
