Baldwin weaves the songs of the Kalevala into a single prose tale. The old minstrel Väinämöinen, the smith Ilmarinen and the reckless Lemminkäinen compete for the Maid of Beauty, daughter of the grim Mistress of the North, and Ilmarinen forges the Sampo, a magic mill of plenty, whose possession sets the heroes at war.
