Presented as the fragment of an autobiography left among the papers of the late Peter Waring, the novel follows a sensitive boy growing up in the north of Ireland. It traces his difficult relations with his father, his friendships, his first love and his struggle to find his own path. Reid later reworked the book as Peter Waring.
