Francisco Ferrer founded the Escuela Moderna in Barcelona as a secular, rationalist school, and was shot at Montjuich in 1909 after a trial widely condemned as a sham. In his own account he explains how his ideals were born, the legacy that made the school possible, its programme, its co-education of the sexes and of social classes, and its war on dogma.
