Dr. Milton Jarvis returns from a medical congress in Vienna in 1926 to find that his closest friend, Jim Craighead, is dead after an amputation that should have healed cleanly. Refusing the obvious verdict, Jarvis reasons through the medical evidence and turns to an ingenious scientific test to show what really happened.
