Saki’s early political satire sends Alice through Downing Street, Pall Mall, Lambeth and St Stephen’s, where the Red and White Queens quiz her on Political Economy and Christian Science and the Liberal Party loses itself in muddle. The satire targets the ministers, generals and party squabbles of the Boer War years, with parodies of Carroll’s verse throughout.
