Samantha Allen of Jonesville persuades her husband Josiah to take her to Saratoga, the most fashionable resort in America. In her own phonetic country voice she reports on the hotels, the springs, the races, flirtations and diamond-studded ‘tramps’ of high society, puncturing pretension while Josiah tries, disastrously, to be stylish.
Holley’s Gilded Age satire was enormously popular, and Samantha’s tart common sense still lands. Download the free EPUB.
