These twelve comic stories are full of sailors ashore, scheming lodgers, formidable widows and matrimonial advertisements, several of them told in the Cockney voice of the old night-watchman on the wharf. Plans to get rich or get out of marriage go wrong with clockwork precision in “Deserted”, “The Toll-House”, “Prize Money” and the rest.
Classic English comic writing, best read aloud in the night-watchman’s accent. Download the free EPUB.
