Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, broke but boundlessly confident, persuades the young writer Jeremy Garnet to join him in setting up a chicken farm on the Dorset coast, with no knowledge of chickens and a growing pile of unpaid bills. While the hens escape and the tradesmen gather, Garnet falls for Phyllis Derrick, whose irascible father is not easily won over.
