An elderly narrator shares his country house with a huge, corpulent chimney that rises from the middle of it like a Henry VIII and governs the shape of every room. His energetic wife and daughters want it removed, an architect hints at secret chambers inside, and the old man digs in to defend his grey companion.
A wry, layered comic story of 1856 for readers who know Melville only from the sea. Download the free EPUB.
