In 1695 the township of Haverhill, Massachusetts, was a frontier settlement on the edge of an unbroken wilderness stretching to the French villages on the St. Francis. Whittier tells how two Bradley boys, Isaac and Joseph, were seized in an Indian raid, how Isaac lay ill through the winter in captivity, and how the boys made their bid for home.
