The story starts with William Penn as a seventeen-year-old Oxford student slipping away to hear Quaker preachers, and follows him to the charter of Pennsylvania and his voyage to the Delaware. Fisher then describes daily life in early Philadelphia, its mix of Quakers, Germans and Scots-Irish, the troubles of Penn’s sons, the French and Indian War, and the beginnings of New Jersey and Delaware.
