During the English Civil War a London ship’s captain named Richard Ingle sailed into the Chesapeake, declared for Parliament against the Catholic proprietary government of Lord Baltimore, and seized St. Mary’s. Drawing on court records, petitions and Ingle’s own defence, this short study asks whether he was the pirate of Maryland tradition or a Protestant partisan caught in the politics of a divided empire.
