A boy with a bundle on a stick appears in an English village and is taken in as a son, while the worldly fruiterer Goldie and the baker’s wife argue over what a man owes this life and the next. Each chapter opens with a line of the Lord’s Prayer, which the story then works out in trials, illness and faith.
